Wyvern of Derwent

Wyvern of Derwent

Owners: Mark and Linda Osborne, moored Port Cygnet

Wyvern was designed by Sir John Illingworth (Sydney to Hobart founder and winner) and Angus Primrose in England in the late 1950's as a Junior Offshore Group (JOG) class of yacht. Built at Port Huon by renowned local boatbuilder Athol Walter, she was launced in 1966. Wyvern is a Mk 0 Top Hat 25 and was built using three layers of diagonally planked King William pine. Hull is not sheathed. Deck is dynel sheathed marine ply and mast and spars are the original cedar items. The mast is hollow.

Since 1982 she has been powered by a Yanmar YSB8, her second motor. Wyvern has spent all her life in southern Tasmanian waters with a good part of that time in the Cygnet area.

Linda and I purchased her from the estate of the previous owner, Stan Kay, who was a much respected and loved member of the club. Stan had owned her for over 30 years and had cruised with family and raced religiously with the Port Cygnet Yacht Club. Stan maintained Wyvern incredibly well during that time. We are new to sailing but have enjoyed out time with Wyvern for the last four years and plan to continue to do so in the future.
