The Stan Kay, 24 Hobson, once our rescue boat

Stan Kay

PCSC's Safety Boat

The Stan Kay is a Solocraft built by H & B Hobson from Wynyard, Tasmania and was designed for coastal work as a fishing boat. It has a 6 cylinder turbocharged Volvo diesel engine which can drive it up to planing speeds (15 knots) under calm or nearly calm conditions, though it is much more economical at 7 -  8 knots. With a length of 26 feet, it provides a spacious flush rear deck to work, and also shelter when at the helm and in a small cabin forward. The hull is made from fibreglass and she has a plywood cabin and timber decks.

The Stan Kay has now found a new home at Cremorne after the club decided it was too difficult to get volunteers who wanted to drive her during races and she was not ideally suited as a response boat for the junior sailing activities. In September it was decided to sell her and the club has since purchased a 6 metre RIB which will be used for our harbour races as well as junior sailing.

In addition to the difficulty of getting volunteers, there was a deal of work that had to be done to get the boat into satisfactory condition, and this new RIB with its 60 hp motor is more manoeuvreable, will be kept out of the water in its trailer, and is in very good condition.

Now will it also be called the Stan Kay?
