Port Cygnet Junior Sailing
The Junior Sailing program proved another popular event for the 08/09 PCSC season. Under the careful guidance of Dave Golding Odin Thom, Kafka Dornam-Tassel, Matthew Morris, Freya Steele-Wood, Lewis Golding, Josh Rowlands, Nicholas Banfield, Guy Roberts and Dave demonstrated and guided the novice sailors in rigging, righting and racing the fleet of Pacers. Across the two, ten week courses, over 30 registered participants took to the water. With fickle wind conditions it appeared at times that some of the participants’ preference was to be in the water rather than on, with numerous requests for capsizes and frequent swimming and water fights. The watchful eyes of Dale, Splash (Ted) and Paul were regularly kept busy counting visible sails and heads, setting racing courses and providing an overall sense of safety for all. “Isis” and its accommodating crew of Geoff and Kate served a diverse role from a “parent and toddler” on water viewing platform, to start and finish line mark, to on water barista service, each role being highly appreciated by those concerned. Each week the BBQ provided a welcome burger or sausage generously coordinated and manned by Paul and Catherine Morris. Behind the scenes Dale kept the Pacers and rescue boats in top condition, replacing bungs, patching epoxy niches and fixing prop guards ensuring each week all boats were ready for action.
The popularity of the Junior sailing was highlighted on the final picnic day with the family sail to Drip Beach.
Under the careful catering of Geoff Cook and Paul Morris there was food for all diets, vegie burgers to snags, salads and sweets arrived from all directions as the crews stowed their boats on the beach following their sail via Deep Bay. It was wonderful to see the senior club members supporting the juniors at Drip Beach along with grandparents, siblings and family.
The Junior Sailing Committee is looking forward to another successful season commencing in October 09. Volunteers for operating the safety boats and skippers for the pacers will be needed. We are hoping senior club members will be able to avail themselves for a few hours of fun on the water to assist in developing and encouraging the future club members.
